Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor Susan Skalski today announced that the 2011 Capitol Christmas Tree will be harvested from the Stanislaus National Forest, a gift to the nation from the State of California. California has been given the honor of providing a Christmas tree 60 feet or taller, that will grace the west front lawn of the U.S. Capitol in December, 2011.

An exact species of tree has not yet been determined. The Superintendent of Capitol Grounds will visit the Forest in late spring or early summer of next year to view potential trees for selection. About 75 additional companion trees of various sizes will be delivered to the Capitol and placed in federal offices.

“We are honored to be selected to provide the Capitol Christmas Tree for the State of California,” said Skalski. “We look forward to working with groups and individuals representing the state and general public in completing the many tasks related to harvesting the tree and preparing it for the great journey to Washington D.C.,” she said.

The Stanislaus National Forest lies in the heart of the State’s iconic Sierra Nevada Mountains nestled between the majestic Yosemite National Park and the incredibly beautiful Lake Tahoe Basin. The Forest Service will recommend up to 10 trees for selection, however, the Superintendent of the Capitol Grounds makes the final selection and determines which tree will be the official Capitol Christmas Tree.

Many communities will be involved in the festivities and celebratory events that will take place in conjunction with the selection, cutting and transportation of the Capitol Christmas Tree, expected to be harvested in November, 2011.
